Product Page Sections on Shopify: What the Theme Gives You

Modern Shopify themes let you stack sections and blocks on the product template. The craft is ordering them around the visitor decision: offer first, proof beside it, detail below for the decided.

The short answer

On current Shopify themes you build a product page from a main product section plus additional sections and, in many themes, blocks and app blocks, arranged in the theme editor. Use that flexibility to follow the visitor decision order: the product, price and buying options first, delivery and returns close to the decision, proof such as reviews where doubt peaks, and longer detail, specifications and story content further down for visitors who need it. Every section should answer a named question. A section that answers nothing is decoration competing with the buy button for attention and load time.

The main product section does the heavy lifting

The main section usually carries the gallery, title, price, variant pickers, quantity and buy buttons, and its settings decide how those elements stack on mobile. Work through its settings before adding anything else: image ratio and zoom behaviour, variant display, whether delivery or pickup information can be shown, and how the buy area behaves as the visitor scrolls, where the theme offers a sticky option. Small choices here affect every product. If a setting is unclear, check the theme documentation linked from the Shopify Help Center rather than guessing, because section and block names vary between themes and versions.

Order sections around doubts

After the main section, place content in the order visitors ask questions. Delivery and returns detail belongs early for considered purchases, specifications and sizing guidance where fit is the doubt, ingredients or materials where composition matters, and reviews where social proof helps decide. Use collapsible rows or tabs if your theme supports them for detail that only some visitors need, so the page stays scannable without hiding information. The test is simple: stand at each section and name the doubt it removes. Keep sections that pass, move sections that belong on another page, and cut sections that only repeat the section above them.

Metafields keep detail accurate at scale

Shopify metafields let you store product specific information, such as sizing notes, materials or care instructions, and display it through theme settings where the theme supports it. That matters for conversion because accurate, product specific detail answers doubts that generic copy cannot. Set up the few fields your products genuinely need, fill them as part of adding a product, and display them consistently. Inconsistent detail, present on some products and missing on others, reads as carelessness. Start with two or three fields rather than a large scheme you will not maintain, and expand only when a repeated visitor question justifies a new field.

App blocks need a placement decision

Reviews, subscriptions, bundles and other app features often arrive as app blocks or injected sections, depending on the app and theme. Place them deliberately rather than accepting the default position. A review summary belongs near the buying decision even if the full review list sits lower, a subscription option belongs inside the buying options where its terms are clear, and trust badges rarely need to appear more than once. After installing any app, view the whole product page on a phone and read it as a stranger would. Apps optimise their own visibility; your job is to optimise the page as a whole, as the apps guide sets out.

Use extra templates sparingly

Themes allow different templates for different products, which suits a store with a hero range needing richer storytelling alongside a standard range needing a clean, consistent page. Use extra templates where the buying decision genuinely differs, for example a configurable product versus a simple one, and keep the core buying elements consistent across templates so returning visitors are not relearning the page. Each additional template is another page type to check after theme or app updates. For most small stores one well tuned product template, plus perhaps one for a flagship range, covers the need without creating maintenance sprawl.

A product template checklist

Work this list on a phone for your best seller and a slow seller. Price and variant total are clear, the buy action is easy to find, delivery and returns are stated in plain words near the decision, the main doubt for this product has a visible answer, images show scale and detail, reviews if shown are real and readable, and nothing pops up in the first seconds to interrupt reading. Then check loading: does the page settle quickly without elements jumping as app sections load? Fix template level problems once and every product improves, which is why this work outranks editing individual product descriptions. Compare with the general bench in product pages that convert.
