Commitment Offers: Annual Plans, Discounts and Honest Lock-In
Annual plans trade a discount for commitment. They convert when the saving is real arithmetic shown plainly, the exit terms are survivable, and monthly stays a respectable choice - not a punished one. This guide covers presenting commitment without coercion.
The short answer
Present the annual offer as arithmetic, not pressure: the monthly price, the annual total, the saving as an amount (and a percentage if it is honest), and what happens at renewal - including how to leave. Keep monthly visibly respectable; a monthly price inflated to make annual look good is a manipulation buyers can smell, and subscription buyers compare notes in public. The customers annual suits - stable teams with budget cycles - will find it when the maths is clear. The customers it does not suit, forced into it, become next year's churn and this year's refund requests.
Show the maths like a shopkeeper
State both prices with the same units and let the buyer verify: monthly at 30, annual at 300, saving 60 a year - shown, not implied by a badge saying 'best value'. Anchor toggles honestly: the default view (monthly or annual first) is a nudge you should be able to defend; defaulting to annual with the monthly price displayed per month in small type is the pattern that generates chargebacks and forum threads. The pricing bench covers the presentation craft; this guide's narrower point is that commitment offers live or die on arithmetic the buyer can check in ten seconds.
Exit terms are part of the offer
Annual buyers are buying a year of a changing product from a small company; their rational fear is being locked into a tool that stops fitting. Answer it in the offer: pro-rata refunds or not (say which), what happens to data at the end, and whether the price is fixed for the term. Generous exit terms feel expensive and behave like the opposite - they remove the main objection, and the accounts that use them are disproportionately the ones that were leaving anyway. Burying the exit is the commitment equivalent of a hidden cancellation button, and it is judged the same way.
Sell annual to the accounts it fits
Segment the push: established accounts renewing happily are annual candidates; new, unproven fits are monthly customers until their usage says otherwise, and pushing them annual buys cash flow at the price of resentment risk. In-product prompts for annual should target tenure and usage stability (the paywall guide's timing rules apply). At renewal, remind with the usage story ('Your team ran 400 reports this year') rather than with discount escalation; a renewal sold on value renews again.
Discounts: a tool with a memory
Every commitment discount teaches the market your real price. Keep the annual saving the standing, public arithmetic; avoid stacking seasonal discounts on top for new buyers while renewals pay full - the discovery of that gap, usually at renewal time, is a churn event with a grievance attached. If a promotion runs, state its terms and its end, and honour the same arithmetic for existing customers who ask. Pricing trust, once spent, is re-earned at the speed of billing cycles, which is to say slowly.
Measure the mix and the second year
Report annual share of new paid, renewal rates by cohort (monthly versus annual), and refund rates on annual plans. The decision metric is second-year behaviour: an annual plan that renews is worth its discount several times over; one that churns at month thirteen was a loan, not a sale. Review the commitment offer annually with the same log discipline as a pricing change - because it is one, and its effects arrive on a delay that hides cause from effect unless the log connects them.
Switching between monthly and annual, mid-relationship
The mechanics of switching are part of the offer's fairness. State how a monthly customer moves to annual (immediately, with credit for the part-month, or at renewal - whichever you do, say it), and how an annual customer steps down at term end without losing data or settings. Ambiguity here breeds support tickets at exactly the moments of highest intent, both directions. Test the switch as a customer annually; billing flows drift as payment providers and plan structures change, and a broken upgrade path discovered by your best customer is a small humiliation with a long memory. The log entry for the test belongs with the pricing checks, dated.
